Order of Saint Arkand Valorous
Within a year of his peaceful death at an old age, the High King and paladin Demitus Arkand was officially sanctified. Priests of Kord were already praying in the paladin’s name before the man’s death. One year after his death, a Warpriest of Kord called upon the name of Arkand while standing alone against a score of foes. The rampaging giants had already demolished the defenses of the small town where the priest was stationed. All the other defenders lay dead or dying. Standing alone, the priest called out to Demitus Arkand for a miracle and then charged into what was surely a suicidal battle. Divine radiance split the heavens, striking all the marauding giants blind and dazed. Somehow, the priest was unaffected, and easily drove the marauders to flee, at heavy losses in their numbers. The devout of Kord declared the paladin a Saint.
The Warpriest, Granthis of Tavanik, formed a new religious group around the paladin, calling it the Order of Saint Arkand Valorous. As its first Abbot, he spent his remaining days recruiting any faithful he encountered. There are those who say he killed all those who would not join by challenging them to a duel. The terms of the duel were simple and brutal. The one who survived was obviously following the better Saint. Granthis never lost a duel in the all the remaining years of his life. Member of the Order point to this fact as the clear favor of Kord, through his newest Saint. There are those outside the Order who are not so generous in their assessment. Some say Granthis was always careful to stack the duel in his own favor, especially as he grew older. These detractors say the first Abbot grew more pragmatic and less fervent in his faith as he aged. It is worth noting that these critics are very cautious about who they say this to.
